Interfaith Exchange Leads to New Worship Space for Ethiopian Orthodox Community

“Our previous church was so small that I would cry. But today, if I cry, I cry because of happiness.” -Melake Tsion Aba Feseha, Ethiopian Orthodox Church member
The Stirling Foundation supported a sustained, multiorganizational initiative to support Utah’s Ethiopian Orthodox community efforts to establish a permanent place of worship in Utah. This effort started after Kesis Tigay, the Secretary General of the Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia, visited Utah as part of a Stirling Foundation exchange program. The community’s former church building consisted of a single room with an outdoor tent regularly used for overflow in all weathers. The newly dedicated Ethiopian Church–a building donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints–includes a large chapel, meeting rooms, kitchen, and priest’s living quarters. It serves as a permanent spiritual and cultural home for the Ethiopian Orthodox community, expanding access to worship while strengthening ties between religious leaders in Ethiopia and the United States.
