Sustainable Livelihoods for Fishing Communities

Strengthening livelihoods by restoring access to traditional sources of income.
In the Nubia region of northern Sudan, families in Akasha village have long relied on fishing along the Nile River as a primary source of income. In recent years, limited access to equipment and markets made it increasingly difficult to sustain these livelihoods.
Working with Elevate for Community Development and local partners, this initiative helps restore fishing-based livelihoods through access to essential equipment and stronger market connections. By enabling families to catch and sell their products more reliably, the effort supports economic stability while reinforcing long-standing community traditions.
The model also encourages community reinvestment, with participating families contributing to local development efforts. Designed with scalability in mind, the initiative offers a pathway for expanding sustainable livelihoods to other fishing communities along the Nile.
